Description
A native to Siberia and Mongolia, the Siberian Pea shrub (caragana aroborecense) was introduced to this country by immigrants who used it as a food source. The peas and the pods, as well as the flowers can be eaten. The whole plant (ning tiao) can be used in the treatment of breast cancer and other gynecologic illnesses. It is also a very good nitrogen fixer, replenishing soils, and most often used as a wind break. It attracts many song birds and honey bees. The honey produced from this shrub has a pleasant and unique flavor.
